Knitting in the round - fast

Woooo, hoooo! The train now standing at platform 4 is the circular sock knitter express. We will be travelling at high speed, so please fasten your seat belt.
We're off! On with the ribber, change half the cylinder needles with ribber needles......

Do 40 rounds of ribbing, then change the ribber needles back to cylinder ones.....

And here's the view down the cylinder to see the ribbing....

60 rounds for the leg, then turn the heel......

Another 60 rounds for the foot and do the toe exactly the same as the heel.
Then we run out of pictures because I have to do a long line of socks all joined together with waste knitting, then graft up the toes and wash and block them. And I didn't get that far yet.
So, the Berridge CSM is really going good since I adjusted the yarn guide, and now I'm going to order some yarn off e-bay so I can make some really nice socks. Think I'll go with 2/16 nm as its an 84 cylinder.

Love that machine! I normally like to do the touchy feely fibre act, but a sock machine rocks.

Glad you enjoyed the chops Joan.
I love the machine too Min. It was a bit dodgy to start with as I had to get more needles and then it seemed to want to slip more stitches in the ribbing than it wanted to knit but now its just motoring. In the late 1970's I earned my living for a while machine knitting socks on a Fosters Victoria Automatic which we bought new from Fosters in Preston, Lancashire. The Berridge is slightly different but the principal is the same. If it wasn't for the cold in the loomshed, I probably wouldn't have spent the time sorting it out. I'm really glad I did!

Wow Sheila - some machine! Hope you are well, freezing here and snowed in. Hamish has the hump - the snow is deep and he is not keen as he disappears! Is Daisy with lamb? x

Thanks for comments. New year is turning out good - lots of enquiries, well-organised life-style for once, and cold weather subsiding a bit. Getting plenty exercise and waiting now for my sock wool to arrive!! Pippin is a mass of raging hormones so the sooner he gets to the vet the better! Daisy lurking in amongst the flock - she can't hide because she's the only white one. Can't tell yet if there's a lamb, but we'll be bringing her into the field under the house at the beginning of March to keep an eye on her. Watch this space.......

My linsey woolsey throw arrived on friday the 15th and I am delighted with it - autumn colors are my favorite and this color combination is really lovely! I especially like the gloss of the linen fibers. I can't wait to share it with my fellow weavers at our February guld meeting!

I am curious as to what the mill does to the yardage in the finishing process?

I'm so glad the wrap arrived ok and that you like it. I love the colour combination too. The new linsey-woolsey is waiting to go to the mill on Thursday. The mill wash, full (bash it about and start the felting process) and press it on big heavy rollers with steam. It shrinks the cloth as well as cleaning it and makes the yarn stick together so it won't fray as much when you cut it.
